Easy Homemade Dog Treat Recipe
Make your own dog treats using this easy homemade dog treat recipe!
I was thinking to myself earlier this week: it’s been a long time since I posted a recipe. I need to do that. Problem is, I’ve been recycling the same five dinner recipes for the past few months! Nothing new going on in my kitchen! BUT…I did just try a new and easy homemade dog treat recipe! My dog loves these treats. I bet yours will too!
Why make your own dog treats?
I love my dog. My dog loves food. When I give my dog food, my dog loves me. But have you seen all the weird junk they add to store-bought dog treats? Dog treats are a lot like processed junky human treats: filled with preservatives, dyes, and chemicals. That’s why I decided to start making our own with this easy homemade dog treat recipe!
Plus these are so easy to make and cheaper than buying the high-quality dog treats at the grocery store. Extra bonus! My kiddo loves to bake, so she was thrilled to help out with this project!
What you need to make this easy homemade dog treat recipe
You probably already have most of the ingredients in your kitchen! Here’s what you need:
A silicone baking mold. Interested in the one pictured? I just wrote a review post on this product for Akron Ohio Moms blog! Check that out here.
A cute helper. Sure you could do this yourself, but what fun is making a homemade dog treat recipe without a little mess?
An oven. Get that baby fired up to 350 degrees F!
Hydrolyzed collagen. This ingredient is optional, and is the only one you might not have in your kitchen. Our dog is 13 years old and she has arthritis. I add collagen protein to her food to help with her old achy joints. I use the stuff too! It’s great for joints, skin, hair, and nails! Pop over to my shop to check out the human-grade product that I absolutely love.
Whole wheat flour. I try to buy organic and sprouted flours: fewer chemicals and easier to digest.
Creamy peanut butter. I try to buy organic and all-natural peanut butter. Yes, the kind that needs to be stirred. Again, fewer chemicals and fillers.
Apple sauce. The apple sauce packets I send in my daughter’s school lunch contain the perfect amount for this easy homemade dog treat recipe!
Chicken or beef broth. You can use your own or canned broth!
A dog. Optional. I actually tried the treats myself and was surprised at how good they are! Kind of like chewy peanut butter cookies, with a lot less sugar!
Easy Homemade Dog Treat Recipe
1 Cup whole wheat flour
4 T Great Lakes hydrolyzed collagen powder
¾ Cup creamy peanut butter
¼ Cup apple sauce (or one 3.2 oz. squeeze packet)
Slightly more than ¼ Cup beef or chicken broth
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Combine all ingredients into a large bowl. It’s easiest to use your hands to mix. The dough will be thick. Once well-combined, press the dough into the silicone mold. (If you don’t have a mold, you can roll the dough out on a countertop and use cookie cutters to cut shapes too!) Put in the oven and bake for 20 to 40 minutes, depending on the size and thickness of your molds or cutout shapes. The silicone baking mold we used created extra thick treats, so we ended up baking them for 35+ minutes.
